AbstractHypercholesterolaemia (high cholesterol) is one of the major risk factors that contribute to the vast number of deaths caused by cardiovascular disease. The South African dyslipidaemia guideline consensus statement (2012) provides strategies to ensure the appropriate diagnosis and management of hypercholesterolaemia. This article provides a review of various available cholesterol-lowering medicines in South Africa, and can assist healthcare providers to select the most appropriate treatment option.
